Framed Agrema mittrei
Argema mittrei (Madagascar comet moth).
This vibrant yellow specimen is native to the rainforests of Madagascar. Mittrei are considered one of the largest silk moths in the world.
Due to having non functional mouth parts, they only live 4-5 days. Their sole life purpose is to "smell" out their mate, reproduce, and die.
Although endangered in the wild, they have been successfully bred in captivity. This particular specimen is from a conservation facility in Italy.
After setting by hand, I have mounted him to a pearlised black card, and finished off the display with a few dry preserved stems of Babies breath and Hydrangea. The Comet is statement enough, and does not need a busy background.
Frame measures 30x37cm
