Natural Death Acherontia atropos ▪︎ Deaths Head Hawkmoth Preservation Frame
Female Acherontia atropos
This large Death's Head Hawkmoth is what is referred to as 'ND' or Natural Death Specimen.
Moths and butterflies naturally start to deteriorate after a number of days. In breeding and study situations, they are typically humanly euthanized when they begin to show dormancy.
This female along with a number of other in her brood, decided to continue growth past winter and completed her natural deterioration. She lived a much longer life than a standard atropos. Seeing them live longer even if by a few days is a wonderful success.
She has some natural splits in the wing, missing antennae, and a perfect, large abdomen which is almost double a standard female size.
